What If?
Have you ever wondered what life would have been like if you could change just one thing?
I wonder what it would be like if I was born in New York or California instead of Maryland, or if I were born in a different decade?
Sometimes I wonder what life would have been like if I were born in 2001, or 1971, or 1930, or 1912, or the 1800’s, or… well, you get the idea.
Also, I do wonder where I would be and how long I would be in a state other than Maryland or Virginia. Annapolis, Maryland is where I was born. I moved with my family to Arnold, Maryland when I was three and lived there until I moved to Lynchburg, Virginia at age nineteen.
What if I was born in New York or California or the state of Washington?
What would happen if I were a child actor, acting in theatres, television series, and movies?
What would happen if I started publishing books at the age of ten? Perhaps, I would have been to lots of book signings.
I wonder how life would be if I were into the making of computer games and did beta testing?
I often wonder about things like these, but I know that God has a plan. He knew when each one of us would be born, where we would live, and He knows when we will die.
Everyone has a life story. Some like to share and tell all that has happened to them. Some people are more private and keep the happenings of their lives a secret.
God fully knows you and He’s the one who is the author of your story. When I look at the word, history, I am reminded that everyone’s story and all that has happened is really His Story – the story of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
The past cannot be re-written. It is done.
My mind does tend to wander to what ifs. Do you find yourself doing that, too?
I keep reminding myself that God has put me where He wants me to be. I have to be okay with what’s real and in front of me, because ultimately, that is God’s best. This is how God is guiding me. He wants me to look at my right now and do what I can see to do without always wishing I was somewhere else doing something else.
Let’s make God our focus and be content with the here and now. That doesn’t mean we cannot have goals – we need to set our hearts and minds on growing. I know myself, though, and I can get stuck in wishing and miss the right-now opportunities around me. I am guessing that you might do that sometimes, also.
As I write this, I have lived 26 years. Through all of those 26 years, God has been in control of my life. He is the director of our lives. And…He loves us. He wants what is best for us. He wants us to know Him. When we know Him, we know the promises He gives us. How do we know Him? …by reading, studying, and holding on to His Word – the Bible.
This particular Bible verse has been an encouragement to me and I hope it is to you, too:
Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT): “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
I want God’s peace. Don’t you? He is offering it to us and all we have to do is pray and believe.
Another reason to not worry too much about the future, Matthew 6:25-34 tells us we don’t need to worry about tomorrow. I will leave you with this wonderful promise:
“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” – (NLT)
