A message to Parents: You need to recharge. You work hard. This is especially true if you are the parent of a child with special challenges. You are often, if not always, on high alert.
This is not you being selfish, this is not only survival, BUT guaranteed you will be a better parent if you get refueled in a way or a variety of ways that work best for you.
Ideas:
- read a book if that relaxes and refreshes you,
- go out with some friends to a ballgame,
- eat chocolate,
- sit quietly in a coffee shop ALONE or with a good friend,
- attend a support group,
- go bargain shopping,
- take a nap,
- go for a run or take a walk,
- enjoy a trip to the ice cream parlor,
- visit a park,
- call a friend or supportive family member and have a nice long chat,
- get your hair cut,
- go to the movies (alone or with a friend),
- take long hot baths,
- paint your nails or get a manicure,
- go to a car show,
- sit in the sun by a pool or lake,
- work on your hobby.
Add your own ideas.
Make it a priority and schedule it because — in the day to day for most families raising children with challenges — there is rarely a time when the tyranny of the urgent isn’t tugging and pulling at you. Chances are that it will not “just happen.” Make it happen!
You need to be purposeful. We actually encourage you to put this in the non-negotiable section of your planning list.
We give you permission. You’re welcome 🙂
Much love,
Tom and Julie Meekins
